The Lufkin Daily News became a member of the Southern Newspapers Inc. family on June 1, 2009, when the Houston-based community newspaper company purchased the Lufkin and Nacogdoches daily newspapers. In 2007, The Lufkin Daily News celebrated its 100th anniversary.
It now has a Sunday circulation of roughly 9,000 newspapers and a daily circulation of about 7,500. The newspaper's primary coverage area is Angelina County, which has a population of about 85,000 people.
In 1977, The Lufkin Daily News won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for stories about abuses in military recruiting and training. Southern Newspapers and its affiliated companies operate 11 newspapers in Texas, and one in Oklahoma. The company is owned by the Walls family of Houston.
